The first promotional items were commemorative buttons. The oldest known ones date back to 1789 and were issued when George Washington became president. It wasn't until a century later, in the late 1800s, that a newspaper printer from Ohio accidentally created the first promotional textile item. During the past sports summer, with the European Football Championship and the Olympic Games as highlights, promotional textiles were everywhere. The "Juichspencer" from Jumbo, the "Buurthempie" from Plus, and AH's "Nederband," inspired by Memphis Depay's white sweatband. It was one big (promotional) party. But what is the origin of promotional textiles? We looked into it for you. FROM PRINTING NEWSPAPERS TO PRINTING CLOTHES Jasper Freemont Meek Jasper Freemont Meek (1856-1918), owner of a small newspaper in the town of Coshocton, one day saw a girl fall on the street with schoolbooks in her hand. Meek thought that children should have a bag for their schoolbooks. He discussed it with his friend Cantwell, owner of Cantwell Shoes on Main Street. They came up with the idea of printing a cheap jute book bag with a simple advertising slogan, "Buy Cantwell Shoes." Every child visiting the store would get a free bag. It didn't take long for the bags to be seen everywhere in the streets. BY JUDITH MUNSTER 8 67 2024 - number 4 - promzvak.nl
