Both are musicians and wanted to develop high-quality headphones that were less harmful to the environment. The first model they brought to market was especially unique due to a usage agreement with the customer. “We started with a pilot product in a sustainable lease construction,” says Galama. “The customer paid a monthly fee and received upgrades and repairs in return. We then looked for a production partner to improve the product for a larger audience. This resulted in the current product line consisting of three headphones: a wired model, a wireless model, and a wireless model with active noise cancelling.” Excellent Audio Repeat's headphones have a starting price of over one hundred euros for consumers. Online reviews of the models are generally excellent. Leenders and Galama sought a manufacturer who guarantees high-quality sound and materials for the development of the devices. “Our manufacturer has personally been the head of audio engineering at Sennheiser (another headphone brand, ed.) for 30 years. We are very critical of the sound of our headphones and work closely with this manufacturer. As a result, it took a while before we had the current three models on the market. In hindsight, we have no regrets, as it has resulted in extremely good products.” From Lease to Purchase Galama explains that the lease construction was discontinued from 2022. “It was conceived so that we could remain the owners of the headphones and parts, which would therefore not be discarded. Especially young people liked the idea and were quite enthusiastic about leasing headphones. But it is also a capital-intensive model that is difficult to finance. Additionally, it hindered cooperation with retail. We could only sell our headphones through our own website, which did not provide enough reach and market share. So, we stopped the lease construction and switched to customer purchase. We now also work with retailers for this. The end user can take out a service contract for repairs and parts, which can be paid annually or in one go.” Degree of Sustainability The circular concept of Repeat, where devices are not discarded, remains intact thanks to the service contracts. This is crucial, as it forms the main aspect of the headphones' sustainability. Galama: “We have the headphones produced from as many sustainable materials as possible, such as recycled plastics. However, that is a relatively simple step, which as a producer has little impact on improving the environment. Therefore, we try to really close the production and usage chain. A headphone consists of parts. With our way of delivery, if something breaks, only that part needs to be replaced. We repair the broken part and bring it back into the chain. This way, the lifespan of our headphones is truly endless, and they are not discarded.” Headphones in Parts Once upon a time, electronic devices could be fairly easily disassembled by the user. Nowadays, many manufacturers glue everything shut hermetically. This makes it difficult to locate and fix the cause of a defect. A closed construction also hampers the recycling of materials. Repeat approaches this differently to ensure the sustainability of devices. Galama: “Our headphones are delivered in a box as separate parts. These are very easy to assemble, without the need for a screwdriver. A box contains two ear cushions, two sound chambers, a headband, a cushion for the headband, two twist knobs, and cables. If something is wrong with one of the parts, the user orders that part from their account on our website. We deliver the part with a return envelope for the broken part. This way, the user experiences convenience and always has a well-functioning product, while together we ensure that no additional e-waste is generated.” Box Adds Value Repeat's headphone parts are delivered in a flat box, where each element is neatly laid out. For the user, just opening the box is a pleasant moment. The delivery in parts adds value through the packaging, which is a significant The 'Green' Headphone 63 2024 - number 4 - promzvak.nl
